I graduated with an MA in Education Management from the University of Bath, UK. I was trained in England in Hospitality Management which led me to specialise in cuisine, patisserie, restaurant service and oenology. I was also awarded the professional membership in the prestigious Institute of Hospitality, UK (formerly known as HCIMA). I joined Berjaya Corporation in 2007 as Chief Operating Officer of BERJAYA UCH. I was ready to take up the challenge of setting up a niche institution that would provide hands-on experience in the hospitality industry that contributes towards excellence in the services industries.
The turning point
For me, the ‘Aha’ moment can be described as the moment where I ‘have the courage not only to help but also lift the gate for others to pass through.’ The turning point came when I was given the opportunity by the Berjaya Corporation to set up a niche institution of higher learning, which offers programmes in the hospitality and services industry. The support and the commitment by the Berjaya Group of Companies gave me the boost to take up the initiative to maximise this opportunity, and together with my colleagues, set up this niche university college that is able to answer the demands of graduates who excel in the services industries.
We had to overcome the challenges of being a young university college and to be able to stand out from the crowd and compete with other established institutions that have been in this industry for over 30 years. We had no track record but we had to know what the Y generation wants. However, seeing how the university college has grown, it has been very encouraging. We are producing award-winning students who are immediately snapped up by the industry workforce.
Advice for graduates
