I began my career with a British based tin mining company followed by an assignment with a main contractor to Shell & Esso oil refineries in Port Dickson. I joined Amsteel Mills, a member of the Lion Group in 1986 as an Electrical Executive. I chose Amsteel because of its excellent employer reputation which emphasised training and development programmes for its employees, both technical and leadership. Furthermore, Amsteel actively promotes work-life balance as well as sports and recreational pursuits to keep its employees fully engaged.
The turning point
I have been extremely lucky to work for Amsteel as its Management placed emphasis on developing technical competence and leadership capabilities. I was given both local and overseas learning opportunities and was sponsored to pursue a part-time Diploma in Management and subsequently a Master in Business Administration as part of my career development. These learning opportunities enabled me to grow and move up the career ladder.
I feel very proud of my 28 years with Lion Group’s Steel Division where the judgments and contributions of the team – including mine even at the early stage of my career were highly valued. Consequently, the team had been able to adapt and anticipate market changes at the desired speed, whilst maintaining good team spirit during challenging times. I am also proud and happy that the Lion Group has groomed me from an engineer to my current position as the Senior General Manager of Amsteel.
My team has achieved many significant milestones over the years. Some of the achievements include:
- Turning around the company’s performance and bottom line.
- Making Amsteel the benchmark in steel plant productivity and cost efficiency within and outside Malaysia.
- Completing major upgrading projects of the plant within budget and schedule.
- Keeping abreast with a global network of high performing steel companies for insights to enhance Amsteel’s business performance.
- Developing young talents for our Steel Division’s future leadership roles.
Advice for graduates
Amsteel and Lion’s Steel Division is always on the lookout for dynamic graduates with a good balance of academic excellence and extra-curricular pursuits. Graduates who demonstrate initiative and drive, are observant, have the ability to express their thoughts and ideas clearly, and are inquisitive are what we will be looking for.
Key skills for future leaders
Leaders of today and the future need to relate with Gen X, Y & future generations of employees and adjust their approach accordingly. They need to have a clear view of the Company’s vision and be communicative, engaging, innovative, results oriented, down to earth and adapt and respond quickly to changes.
