Kamini Thiruthonder

Sunway College
Audit Manager
Kamini has completed ACA ICAEW at Sunway TES College in the year 2012.

What did you do at university?
Right after completing secondary school, I enrolled myself in Sunway-TES for the Certified AccountingTechnician (CAT) programme. My golden ticket to acquire an ACA qualification arrived when BDO provided me with the opportunity to pursue the ICAEW ACA qualification via a training contract.

Why did you choose a career in your field?
I chose to be an accountant because I have always had apassion for the accounting field. I also know for a fact that, in order to climb the ladder in my field, I would need to have an ACA qualification. I was blessed to have received the opportunity to pursue the ICAEW professional qualification sponsored by BDO. Now that I have gained the ICAEW ACA advantage, I believe it will certainly open multiple gateways for me to progress in my career.

What do you do in your job?
Currently I work as an audit manager with BDO Malaysia. My role requires me to supervise, direct and review results of the engagement teams. This includes audit planning, control testing, substantive work, supervising junior staff, audit reporting and completion.

What do you like most about your job?
The best part of my job is the opportunity to travel around the globe where I have had the chance to meet and work with people of different cultures and origins. Apart from that, the sense of accomplishment that I get from successfully completing challenging assignments, gives me the satisfaction and keeps me going. I believe that, being a woman, independence and perseverance will take me a long way in BDO.

What skills do you consider to be essential for your job?
Having a certain level of technical knowledge in terms of the fundamental concepts of accounting and auditing is crucial. However, that can be acquired through experience. The right attitude and discipline as well as the ability to focus and work on assignments given are the most important qualities to be instilled.

I dedicate my sincerest gratitude to BDO for the opportunity given to me to start working and pursue the ICAEW at a very young age. BDO has given me such diverse exposure and endless guidance, which has helped me get to where I am today.

What are your future plans?
I am currently undertaking a secondment to BDO US for a year and a half. When I return to BDO Malaysia, I intend to further propel my career advancement in BDO. Hopefully, I will accomplish being an audit partner within the next five years.

Some Advice
I would encourage those who are planning to pursue ACA or other professional qualifications to do so with a blend of passion, determination and discipline. As the Adidas slogan reads, ‘Impossible is nothing’. I would say, you just need to put your mind into it.
