5 Steps To Researching Your Employers: Do Your Homework
There’s much you should do before you even apply for an internship, management trainee programme or graduate job.
1. Go to the source: the company website
Doing your research on the company you want to intern or work for should start right here: their website. It might seem a little obvious (not to mention old-fashioned) but browsing an employer’s site is the best way to start acquiring the basics about them. After all, you wouldn’t want to be caught not knowing what they do during the interview.
2. Get connected: social media
Social media a powerful tool for job hunting, but many students and graduates fail to maximise its potential. Don’t fall into that category. Follow your favourite companies on the popular social media platforms, but pay special attention to LinkedIn as it is a platform built specifically for professional networking. You will even be able to look up your potential interviewers on it.
3. Look for news: search engines
Google can be your best friend along this journey to landing your dream job. Once you have shortlisted a few companies that seem interesting to you, run a quick search on them and see what pops up. Chances are you will come across bits of information that may come in handy during the interview. Some of the things you may find on one of these searches are news pieces, which could reveal the latest happenings within the company.
4. Ask questions: personal contacts
If you can find people who work in company (or industry) of your interest, you should go all-out to ask them questions. Find out what their company looks for in a fresh hire. Or ask them about the culture. Nothing beats a reliable, first-hand account from an employee who has been there and done that. You don’t have to look far – ask around and you may come across a relative or a friend-of-a-friend who’s already working in your industry of choice.
5. Learn from recruiters: interviews
When you get the chance to attend real interviews, take the chance to ask the recruiters in-depth questions about the industry they operate in. If you take note of steps 1-4 above, you will know what kind of questions to ask. Turning the tables on the interviewers doesn’t just impress them, it will also prepare you for future interviews.
