Current role
As a managing director, I am very fortunate to have a great management team as my backbone of support. The secret to AEON’s success is transforming employees into leaders and inculcating a focus on team effort in order to create the dynamic active organisation that is AEON. Our goal is to remain competitive in the growing retail industry without sacrificing our adherence to ‘Customers First’. This has allowed us to achieve all that we have so far.

What attracted you to this role and this company?
What I like about AEON Co (M) Bhd is that, like our parent company in Japan, the local employees cultivate the culture of kaizen, which means ‘continuous improvement’. It’s the driving force behind our determination to always be better.

What makes you suitable for this job?
My belief that women can be successful in the corporate world combined with my refusal to give up resulted in me becoming Managing Director in 2011. True, the retail world does consist of long and wrong hours, but the occupational demands and pressure only serve to make it a challenging and exciting field.

What is the one skill you possess that makes you an effective leader?
For me, it’s all about the passion and effort that you put in. People who enjoy their work contribute exponentially and are immensely more productive, and this shows through our work. As I mentioned before, the passion I have for my job enables me to overcome any difficulties that come my way, and allows me to inspire and lead the employees under me.

Professional motivation
I take every challenge as an opportunity in disguise. That way, I keep an open mind to new developments and my spiritual beliefs are reassured.

The best advice that I can give to aspiring CEOs and MDs is to work with passion in order to grow and excel in whatever you do, to never ever give up,and to always accept new responsibilities as a challenge.
