Bachelor in Mechanical Systems Engineering, Tokyo University of Agriculture & Technology, Japan, 2008
What did you do at university?
During my first two years in university, I studied the basics of mechanical systems engineering. After that, I chose to focus on aerospace energy and research wise, my specialisation was tribology, which is the study of the principles of friction, lubrication and wear.
Why did you choose a career in your field?
At the start of my career, I had a short stint at Daikin Industries Limited, Japan, but I soon returned to Malaysia to pursue my career in O.Y.L. Manufacturing Co Sdn Bhd, which is a member of Daikin Group. At first, I was attracted to the friendly people I met during the job interview and it made me think that this could be a good working environment for me. I initially chose to work as a production engineer and was later given the opportunity to transfer to the Strategic Managementdepartment.
What do you do in your job?
My job in Strategic Management is project-based. Our team is required to solve problems raised by the management depending on the status of the company. At the same time, we are given the flexibility to start our own projects and give recommendationsto the management. My tasks include factory improvement, which includes giving kaizen (improvement) skill training to key members, planning and execution, follow up as well as leading and organising kaizen projects in the factory.
What do you like most about your job?
I can learn a lot of things about management, strategy and leadership from my colleagues, mentor and the management. I have a great working team who shares the same passion that I have in developing people. What I find most satisfying is that people are willing to take up challenges and do more than what they have already accomplished during the trainings.
What skills do you consider to be essential for your job?
Both technical and soft skills are essential. Most of my tasks require analysis and data compiling. Goodpower point knowledge can help develop presentation skills, which is a key point to ensure that other people can understand and accept your ideas.
What are your future plans?
There are so many things that I still need to learn. I hope I can develop projects that can benefit the company and me. When I am ready, I would like to pursue my studies in business management in the future.
Be ready at all times! Working is a learning experience, but always remember that you are hired as a professional no matter what field you choose. Do anything you like, be brave to take on challenges and try to gain as much working experience as you can.
