What did you do at university?
The main reason for choosing electrical engineering stemmed from my strong interest and inquisitiveness on the working mechanism of electrical and electronic circuits. There are some study scopes that are applicable to my job such as power electronic, motor control, microprocessor, etc.

As for non-academic involvements, I took part in some motivational trainings and society activities to improve my teamwork spirit, discipline and stress management.

Why did you choose a career in your field?
I joined O.Y.L. after I graduated from university. O.Y.L. is one of the few companies in Malaysia that has the platform to fulfil my ambition in doing R&D and product design. The company provides sufficient resources in design scope, starting from the prototype until its release in the market. I believe I can grow together with the company.

What do you do in your job?
I started my career as a software engineer in 2002. My primary job function was software programming and developing reliable firmware for the controller. Later, I was chosen to take part in one of the most important and latest evolution of airconditioning technologies – the INVERTER. Currently, my scope of responsibility is expanded to developing high-performing teams on technical know-how.

What do you like most about your job?
One of the statements in the O.Y.L. philosophies that is embedded in my mind is ‘those who cannot find pleasure in their work will be unhappy in their lives’. As we are a multinational company, I have the opportunity to travel abroad to places such as US, Europe and Japan, and I am able to broaden my exposure by attending trainings, conferences as well as technical support related fields.

What skills do you consider to be essential for your job?
We need to have adequate knowledge on electronics, motor control and programming language. All the fundamental technical knowledge can be gained from books but the theoretical knowledge needs to be applied in order to gain hands-on experience. Project management skill is also a must as it will help deliver projects at a faster pace in an increasingly demanding environment.

What are your future plans?
Currently my vision is to incorporate new technologies in our company’s product. The ultimate objective is to produce new products with value-added features by anticipating customer’s future needs. Three years down the road, my target is to become an all-rounded technical expert or a technical advisor to O.Y.L.

Some Advice
A sophisticated electronic design is always supported by fundamental laws and principles. Most of the time, I gain promising results whenever I solve design problem by starting from the fundamental level. I am a strong believer in progressive learning. Knowledge and technical skill can be accumulated gradually through discovery and experience. The key point is to never stop learning and to continue improving ourselves.
