Muhamad Firdauz Bin Mahmud
I studied Business Information Systems majoring in e-commerce. I must say that the experiences and knowledge I gained at university have prepared me well for my current role in IT Risk and Assurance. Having studied the right subjects is important but the willingness to learn and the ability to make sound decisions are some of the vital qualities one should also possess.
I interned with the Capability Management department at PETRONAS for eight months, and gained invaluable skills in event management, communications and networking. A year later, I joined EY as a fresh graduate and found that those soft skills helped me to adapt well to my new career. The ability to manage my time to meet tight deadlines and to communicate well with my managers and colleagues boosted my confidence at work.
My company and job
I currently work with EY’s Advisory Services and provide IT auditing and consultancy services to a range of clients across various industries. My role includes participating in meetings to understand the client’s requirements, researching and presenting solutions, and implementing those solutions accordingly.
The best and worst bits
What I enjoy most about working in EY is its people culture. The firm emphasises inclusiveness and teaming as part of its values and provides us opportunities to work with colleagues from other services lines through client engagements, corporate social responsibility programs and other events. I am also motivated by the career development opportunities available to me in EY as career success is important to me. The main challenges of my job are the long working hours and the tight deadlines we face within this industry.
My most memorable achievement at work
It is hard to decide my most memorable achievement at work as each project and engagement offer different challenges. I take satisfaction from being able to get involved in a variety of projects, from start to end, and knowing that my work helps benefit my clients. Providing quality work on time always leaves me with a sense of accomplishment.
Getting the job
I believe good academic results and past work experience helped me secure the interview, but my communication skills and willingness to learn and contribute to the firm helped me get the job. A positive and professional approach to work always helps in making the right impression on potential employers.
Be prepared for
Be prepared for long working hours, tight deadlines and ad-hoc presentation requests. More importantly, be prepared to commit to your job and always deliver the highest quality of work to all your clients.
Build a strong academic foundation. It is also important to be willing to learn, to be open to different possibilities and to be passionate about delivering quality work. Be interested to meet and communicate with people, and to put in the hard work.
