Executive, Product Development & Marketing

Bachelor of Science (Hons) Actuarial Science, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), 2010

At university
I studied actuarial science (AS) because I loved mathematics in high school. However, AS is not only about maths and formulas, it also involves comprehensive learning modules, such as business administration, financial risk management and etc. The subjects provided me a better understanding of the fundamentals of the ever-changing Malaysian financial industry.

My background
I joined the Prudential Management Associate Programme (MAP) where I was enrolled in the six-month Financial Sector Talent Enrichment Programme (FSTEP) managed by Institut Bank-Bank Malaysia incollaboration with Bank Negara Malaysia. This is an eye-opening learning experience and a great introduction for fresh graduates to the banking and insurance industries.

My company and job
As part of the product marketing team at Prudential, I am required to put on my creative hat to design innovative products for different market segments. I am also responsible in the preparation of product launching strategies, ie target market and sales distribution, which include the development of sales and marketing materials.

The best and worst bits
One thing I like is that it is not a routine. The day-to-day tasks challenge my thought process and generating new marketing ideas keeps me motivated. However, it’s really challenging to complete tasks with tight deadlines. There are many issues and factors that may contribute to a delay, such as the complexity of the task or the number of people involved.

My most memorable achievement at work
I was involved in a marketing project where I successfully developed a first-of-its-kind marketing tool – an iPad application designed for Prudential agents to provide prospective customers with a comprehensive and interactive presentation to ensure a complete understanding of the coverage provided.

Getting the job
It was a robust interview process! Firstly, through a selection process by HR, my interpersonal skills, public speaking skills, and proficiency in written and spoken English were evaluated. Based on my academic background, strength sand personality, they elected the most suitable department which could fully capitalise on my skills and talents. The second interview was conducted by the head of product marketing. I believe I got the job because I was able to demonstrate my ability to work in a dynamic environment with high confidence and effective communication skills.

Be prepared for
All graduates must be well prepared of the fast-paced and dynamic working environment. You may also be required to work long hours.

Some advice
If you have basic insurance knowledge or a degree in a relevant field, it will be easier for you to understand the workload. But I believe that attitude is a bigger contributor to our success, so having a positive attitude and passion for achievement is crucial for career advancement.
