Yee Sook Mei (Nicole)

Acting Supervisor, Audit

BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance, University of West of England, UK, 2009

What did you do at university?
I completed accounting and finance in University of West of England, Bristol, UK. I was a science stream student until I chose economics as one of the subjects during my pre-university. I started to build an interest in economics and accounting as I appreciated figures more than theories. With these two areas, I believe I am more well equipped for the business world.

Why did you choose a career in your field?
Upon my graduation, I joined a commercial company as an accounts executive. After working for a month, I realised it is not what I wanted to pursue, as my dream is to have my own business in the future. Knowing that audit is the best stepping stone, I decided to enter the industry.

What do you do in your job?
I manage audit assignments of various industries, ranging from small- and medium-sized to public-listed companies. My job requires me to communicate with clients constantly to ensure quality assurance service is delivered and deadlines are met.

What do you like most about your job?
There are a lot of things I like about my job. Firstly, I am always exposed to different industries, be it manufacturing, agriculture, trading, etc. It’s an eye-opener to me. Besides that, I get to travel around, be it in Malaysia or overseas. Well, the most satisfying thing is when my superiors and clients recognise my efforts at work. This is what keeps me motivated!

What skills do you consider to be essential for your job?
Apart from technical skills, communication skills and thinking skills are equally important as we are not only dealing with numbers. I was a shy person, but I brushed up my communication skills while working in a Japanese restaurant during my studies in the UK. Besides that, I am putting the thinking skills that I have learned in A levels to good use too!

What are your future plans?
I would like to complete my ACCA exams and gain as much experience as I can so that I can equip myself well to start my own business in the future.
